Am I a ‘sustainable’ designer?
The word sustainability can be tricky. I love Rebecca’s take on this design category, which can be fraught with preciousness. Despite our best intentions to create mindful spaces, we need to balance practicality, budget, and the reality that we are not going to save the Earth one sofa at a time. Of COURSE, our material choices matter for our health and our environmental health. Of COURSE using principles from Biophilic Design and Neuroasthetics can make a huge difference on the outcome of a project and how it impact those using the space. But, sometimes you just want to do a great job and say ‘nailed it’ when a room comes together, rather than wax on about the ethical implications of it all. The design-build industry is inherently consumption based, which I grapple wtih a lot. I’ve moved closer to local vendors, vintage sourcing, and my vetted sources for building and surface selections, but it’s still pretty hard to sell sustainability when that word is so loaded, and there is so much greenwashing about. Essentially, I concur with Rebecca! Check out her article on Medium to get her take! She always keeps it real 😁
Happy Friday! I’m off to shoot my latest bathroom remodel, so stay tuned for the photos!
