Hello, friends!
First off, I want to acknowledge the timing of my joining Substack just as the fires in LA began. I had not yet realized the tremendous impact it was having on my hometown, and I regret the poor timing. It’s been an immensely challenging time, and my heart goes out to everyone affected. I’ve put together some resources from the design community for fire victims, which I hope can be of some help during the recovery process ahead.
1. Stevie Howell Studio
2. Parachute Home
3. Olive Ateliers
4. LACANDO
5. The Los Angeles Green Building Council (USGBC-LA)
USGBC-LA has created a disaster relief initiative to support the rebuilding of eco-friendly homes and businesses. They are providing resources on green building practices and sustainable materials to fire victims looking to rebuild their spaces.
Check out this coverage about the resilience of Passive House architecture that I find hopeful as LA begins to rebuild.

Alinged Architecture: Free House Plans for fire victims.
I recently came across this post for the rebuilding of the sanctuary at Breitenbush. Much of Breitenbush was burned down in the fires in 2020 that devastated many parts of Oregon, and they’re still rebuilding. I was able to visit last year for a much needed soak, and it was pretty intense to see so much gone, but hopeful to see what was already being done to restore the land and property. I visited the architect’s website and was thrilled to discover that they offer free house plans for disaster relief and affordable housing.
